Penghu

Like pearls scattering in the East Sea, the Penghu archipelago is located in the southwest of the Taiwan Strait. The location is between Chiayi county and Kinmen county, facing Taiwan on the east, and Fujian Province on the west, linking Matsu archipelago, Dachen island and Zhoushan archipelago on the north, and Dongsha islands and Nansha islands on the south. Located midway between Taiwan and Mainland China in the Taiwan Strait, Penghu possesses an important geographical position.

The Penghu archipelago consists of near one hundred islands. The land area totals about 127 square kilometers. The Magong Island (including Magong City and Huxi) is the largest island in the archipelago, followed by Xiyu, Baisha. Only 20 islands are inhabited. The archipelago is located between 23。C47' to 23。C9' north latitude and 119。C18' to 119。42' east longitude.

The Penghu archipelago, lying in the middle of the Taiwan Strait, is the only island whose coastlines are formed of basalt magma. It is the hometown of sea and wind as well as basalt.

Cross-sea Bridge

The Great Penghu Bridge crosses over the Houmen Channel between Basha and Xiyu Islands. The rush water, known as the second most dangerous current in Penghu seas, is said to charge in at 3 meters per second. Construction of the Great Penghu Bridge began in 1965 and ended in 1970, designed to provide an easy access for Xiyu Island. Due to severe corrosion of the bridge beams, the bridge was expanded in 1984 and rebuilt into two-lane road bridge in 1996. Part of the cement pillars and structures of the earlier bridge are still preserved at the north side Xiyu end. Mottled bridge piers narrate the story of a retired bridge delivering electricity to the residents through the high-voltage cables running along the bridge. The purpose to construct Penghu Bridge is to facilitate the communication between Magong Island and Hsiyu Island, and to control the “roar door" vessels, so Penghu Cross-sea Bridge is a very important building. After this bridge opened to traffic, it became very important network road for Penghu County, thus contributing to local prosperity. Immediately before entering the Penghu Cross-sea Bridge, you can see a large white arch. On the right there is a golden inscription “Penghu Cross-sea Bridge”, which is a very famous landmark.

Speaking of Penghu, the romantic Cimei Twin Hearts Stone Weir can never be missed. The Twin Hearts Stone Weir is located in Dunghu village in Cimei Township, Penghu. Not only does the name “Cimei”, meaning “seven beauties”, sound beautiful itself, the two connected heart-shaped stone weir near the coast also make the place so romantic that many tourists come attracted by its reputation. There are especially many couples visiting here, and it seems that coming to the Twin Hearts Stone Weir together, they can be blessed.   Cimei Twin Hearts Stone Weir consists of two heart-shaped stone weirs, connecting end to end and forming a double heart-shaped romantic picture. The two hearts respond to each other, and look like two lovers lean close together. Since the Twin Hearts Stone Weir gained its popularity, it has become the synonym of Penghu’s tourism.   A Beautiful trap   Though the beautiful Twin Hearts Stone Weir is associated with romance, the stone weirs are originally used as a trap to catch fish. When the tide rises, it floods the stone weir, bringing a great amount of fishes when it ebbs, the fishes are trapped in the stone weir because of the drop of water level. And it’s like catching the turtle inside the jar.

Tongpan Basalt

Tongpan Basalt

Tongpan Basalt is a Geological Terrain located in Tongpan Island, Penghu County it is also the most magnificent island among basalt poles in Penghu Islands.  Basalt has the lowest level of Viscosity and faster speed in gas exhaust of lava among all kinds of volcano lava hence, it easily forms volcano tableland or mesa.  Penghu is also the only one region who has Basalt mesa.   Name of “Tongpan” originates from shape of basalt resembles with a bucket and a tray upside down.  The lava of volcano will shrink after cooling and then form a state of joints in shape of stony pole such kind of pole type basalt is surrounding with Tongpan Island except the coast of north part, it forms a very particular scene.   On the way you climbing the trail along hillside, you can observe Tongpan Basalt closely the whole picture of resembled hillside is composed of “pole” of Basalt never seen before.  There are many notches and gaps on basalt, hence, looking like they are about to collapse however, in fact, they are standing still there.    If you watch this whole Tongpan Basalt on the upper layer of walkway, you will find that it really resembles a tableland or mesa.  If you look it afar, it is like a mountain however, the top side is very flat actually Nature is really very mysterious.  Tongpan Pole Basalt constitutes scenes of cliff with poles, and because it is lack of nutritious soil, few plants can live here.  Only cactus which adapts itself to this environment and Tongpan basalt form such a beautiful picture.
