Hualien

Splendid landscape has enriched the pure beauty of nature in Hualien. Tourism resources such as Taroko National Park, East Coast National Scenic Area, East Rift Valley Scenic Area and Yushan National Park are the four main highlights (from north to south).

 

Xiuguluan River is famous for white water rafting. World's Top 10 must-see sights - Taroko Gorge

The Taroko Gorge is a spectacular 19-kilometer long canyon in Taiwan's east coast a short drive from Hualien. The climate is usually cool and humid, but again perfect for any of the trekking options at any of the long or short trails available, biking or whitewater rafting.  It's just over 60 kilometers from the coast, yet it is home to some of the highest peaks in Taiwan at over 3,400 meters. It can be easily visited by bus, car or scooter and has enough treks to keep you busy for several days, but most people usually only visit it on one.

Baqi lookout stands at 32 km on Highway 11. It is one of the few highest points on the coastal highway. Standing on the lookout, to the south you see Jiqi Bay, Turtle Roaring Cape, Sinshe Cliff, and other unique features of the coastal landscape.There are several coin-operated telescope for a clearer view of the surroundings. At sunset, you can spot fishing boats coming home; to the south you see the volcano on the south side of Jiqi Bay. East Coast National Scenic Area Administration organized a rest area here with shades, gardens, an aboriginal souvenir shop selling authentic handcrafted goods, as well as hot and cold beverages and snacks.

In the East Rift Valley National Scenic Area Taiwan's largest variety of Indigenous culture can be found. This area is rich in Ami, Puyuma, Bunun, Truko, and Sazikaya Aboriginal culture. Every July and August, a continuous series of harvest festival activities takes place. Full of ethnic features, they are the most important annual ceremonies of each Indigenous settlement. Through various traditional  sacrificial and song and dance ceremonies, the tribal members pay homage to the protection provided them by their spirit-ancestors during the past year, and also pray for favorable weather and an abundant harvest in the coming year
